The Traffic Offenders Intervention Program

This program is run through the Local Courts of New South Wales. Magistrates may sentence a Traffic Offender to take part in an Intervention Program. Some sentences under the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure Act) 1999 carry stipulations that the offender will attend an intervention program. The magistrate may also defer sentencing till offender has completed the intervention program.

The program was set up for the purpose of education and rehabilitation of drink driving offenders, it has been referred to in the guideline judgment for High Range DUI. This guideline judgment found that the undertaking of an intervention program is a relevant factor in the offender's favour when it comes time for sentencing.

The main providers of the TOIP are the Police and Community Youth Centres or PCYCs. In Armidale the local PCYC organises and runs a Traffic Offenders Intervention Program 6 times a year. The program consists of one 2-hour session every Wednesday for 6 - 8 weeks. The offender must complete each session to successfully complete the course. Each week includes a lecture given by a speaker from a different feild related to safe driving.

North & North West Community Legal Service particpates in the Legal Service lectures for the TOIP.

If you wish to learn more about the TOIP or would like to enroll please contact your local TOIP provider. If you live in or around Armidale your local provider is the Armidale PCYC. Thier contact details are provided below:
